Wind Tunnel Facilities

BMT operates a number of major wind tunnel facilities including a large Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel and a High-Speed Uniform Flow Wind Tunnel.

Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel

Closed return type with a glass walled working section, and atmospheric boundary layer simulation, used for a wide range of applications including wind loading, safety, risk and environment impact for offshore installations.

Specifications and Key Features

  • Test section - 4.8m x 2.4m x 15m
  • Wind speed range - 0.2 to 45m/s
  • Full atmospheric boundary layer simulation
  • 4.4m diameter motorised multiple plate turntable
  • 3-dimensional computer controlled traverse system

High-Speed Uniform Wind Tunnel

Closed return type, with a glass walled working section, used for section model tests and applications requiring low turbulence flow or uniform turbulent flow.

Specifications and Key Features

  • Octagonal test section 2.7m x 2.1m
  • Wind speed range 0.2 - 65m/s
  • Turbulence grids
  • Motorised turntable
  • Dynamic rig for aero-elastic response simulations

Instrumentation

The wind tunnels are equipped with comprehensive data acquisition and instrumentation, which include:

  • Sensitive 6-component high frequency force transducer
  • A wide range of 3-component and 6-component static force transducers
  • Electronic multiple Channel low-range pressure scanning system (>500 channels)
  • Multi-channel hot-wire and hot film anemometry for wind speed and turbulence measurements
  • Irwin probes for fluctuating wind speed tests
  • Multi-channel non-contacting displacement transducer system
  • Accelerometers for flow-induced vibration measurements
  • Flow visualisation facilities including smoke generation
  • Analogue & digital video recording with editing facilities
